Friday February 24 vs. The Florida Everblades
ELMIRA, N.Y. - February 24, 2017 - Davis Vandane broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period and the Elmira Jackals (10-36-6-1) handled the first place Florida Everblades (35-11-2-3), 3-1, Friday night at First Arena. The win snapped the Jackals 16-game winless streak and tied the season series with the Everblades at two wins apiece.
In the fourth of five meetings between the two teams, the Jackals prevailed in a competitive first period with a 1-0 lead. Matt Lane opened the scoring at 11:49, finishing off a shift where he created two or three opportunities all over the ice. He passed the puck from the right circle to Brycen Martin at the left circle. Martin faked a shot then slid wide before passing back to Lane in the slot, where he fired home his 10th goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.
Florida pulled even after another tight period in the second. With the teams skating four aside, the Everblades won a right circle offensive zone faceoff to set up the tying goal. Zack Kamrass fired a point shot, which was tipped by Dalton Smith to tie the game 1-1 at 16:09 of the second period. The game would remain even 1-1 heading into the final period.
The Jackals controlled play in the third period, outshooting the Everblades 13-4 over the final 20 minutes. They got the eventual game-winning goal 6:26 into the period when Davis Vandane converted on a rush for the Jackals. Kenton Miller found Charlie Mosey down the right wing. Mosey pulled up along the right wall and then fed Vandane in the slot. He had all sorts of room and zipped a wrist shot through Anthony Peters to put Elmira ahead for good, 2-1.
Elmira played well with the lead the rest of the third and then Miller iced the game with an empty-net goal at 18:02, scoring his team-leading 18th goal of the season on a pass from Mosey. Miller's goal put the Jackals up 3-1, which would stand as the final score. Andy Iles stopped 22 Florida shots to earn his second win against his former club this season.
